Several examples of this superb design are still sailing in our area, and they are famous for their spectacular sailing performance and appearance.

An S-Boat is quite different from typical knockabout sloops that came out about the same time. She has a sharply snubbed knuckle bow and deeply V’d, “built-down” hull sections fairing into her very abbreviated, deep keel, the characteristic Herreshoff pointed cabin trunk, and a dramatic looking rig featuring a sharply curved mast and a large mainsail.

Her cabin is large enough for some simple cruising, and she has a large and comfortable cockpit, but her chief claim to fame is her great speed under all conditions. The large main is ideal for light air, and she is stiff enough to be driven very hard when the wind pipes up. She was created as a sailing machine first and foremost, and she will still walk right by many more recent designs, while looking great and providing her crew with a real understanding of the excellence that made the Herreshoff reputation.
