You-You

Bugatti “YOU-YOU” Prototype

Ettore Bugatti

A one-of-a kind Bugatti “YOU-YOU” prototype, discovered on the deck of the 122’ classic steam yacht ATLANTIDE, restored by Artisan Boatworks with engine work by Leydon Restorations—the standard for concours-level authenticity.

Behind the Build

A Bugatti On the Water

Among Bugatti artifacts, the You-You boats are unicorns: three small mahogany launches designed and built by Ettore Bugatti at his Seine-side yard, with one prototype each in 9-, 11-, and 13-foot variants. Bugatti died before these boats could go into production, making the surviving prototypes literally priceless and highly coveted within Bugatti circles. Several have crossed the stage at major auctions and museums as “among the most desirable and unusual pieces of Bugattiana.”

When ATLANTIDE was shipped by her current owner to the Netherlands for a comprehensive rebuild at Royal Huisman, Artisan Boatworks was selected to execute the You-You’s restoration—an assignment few yards on earth could credibly accept.

Making it Happen

Conservation Methodology, Coachbuilder Standards

The restoration of YOU-YOU, a significant Bugatti powerboat, was approached as a comprehensive conservation project designed to preserve the vessel’s exact historical form and provenance while ensuring its long-term integrity. The process commenced with Research and Documentation, wherein the team performed a thorough literature and archive sweep, examining drawings and early marketing materials from the Bugatti Trust, accounts from previous owners and restorers, and relevant newspaper articles. This exhaustive effort established the “red-line” for originality and guided every subsequent step of the conservation.
