Sardine
Herreshoff Fish Class (Original 1916 Fleet)
Nathanael G. HerreshoffArtisan restored Sardine, a 1916 Herreshoff Fish Class, with uncompromising traditional methods while discreetly installing a Beta 14 diesel to extend her usability and range.
Guardians of a Herreshoff Legacy
The Herreshoff Fish Class remains one of the most enduring small-boat designs ever created. First launched in 1916, these vessels are as admired today for their balance and beauty as they were a century ago. Sardine, a sister to Sculpin and Anchovy, belongs to that original fleet. Artisan Boatworks was tasked with restoring Sardine so that she could sail as a true Herreshoff—faithful in construction, detailing, and appearance—while also meeting her owner’s request for reliable auxiliary power.
Traditional Restoration, Intelligent Modernization
Sardine’s backbone and frames were renewed in oak; her planking was cedar; fasteners were bronze. Decking, coamings, spars, and joinery were executed in traditional species, all finished with multiple coats of varnish and paint. Artisan’s crew matched Herreshoff Manufacturing Company’s scantlings and patterns to preserve authenticity.
