Wisp
39 ft Custom Day Sailer
Stephens Waring DesignDelivered two weeks early after just 11 months, Wisp proves Artisan Boatworks’ mastery at orchestrating partners, suppliers, and craftsmen to meet exacting standards under pressure.
A Summer Dream Under Pressure
The owner of Wisp, an experienced Connecticut sailor, wanted more than a yacht — he wanted his dream boat ready for the upcoming summer season. That meant Artisan Boatworks had to deliver a 39-foot Spirit of Tradition day sailer/cruiser in just 11 months — a schedule that would normally require at least 18.
The goals were ambitious. Artisan needed to bring Stephens Waring’s sophisticated drawings to life without compromise, ensuring precision design realization at every turn. The yacht’s performance had to be tailored specifically for light airs in Long Island Sound, with a rig and hull form that balanced speed, comfort, and handling. The luxury fit-out called for a day sailer that doubled as a refined weekend cruiser with standing headroom, seating, and berth capacity.
Perhaps most challenging was the compressed delivery timeline. Artisan had to orchestrate a project that touched dozens of suppliers and subcontractors, all while simultaneously maintaining 80+ customer boats in their service program. The stakes were high: a missed deadline would mean an entire sailing season lost.
Orchestrating Maine’s Maritime Masters
Artisan Boatworks rose to the challenge by turning the project into a symphony of partnerships, logistics, and craftsmanship. The build required industry partnerships at an extraordinary scale. Stephens Waring Design worked in close coordination to interpret and adapt drawings in real time as build decisions required. Lyman-Morse delivered the fiberglass cockpit tub, fabricated offsite and installed on schedule, while Front Street Shipyard provided water-jet cut components with exacting tolerances. Specialty suppliers across Maine and beyond—hardware, systems, rigging, and fittings—were sourced from over 20 trusted partners.
Artisan’s in-house ingenuity maximized efficiency at every turn. The team built the hull on the shop’s first floor while the deck was simultaneously fabricated on the second floor—an approach that cut weeks off the schedule without sacrificing precision. The hybrid wood-composite construction featured a cold-molded wood/epoxy hull for strength and responsiveness, a foam-cored plywood deck for rigidity and weight savings, and carbon-fiber spars with modern sail-handling systems to deliver performance with push-button ease.
Project management excellence made the difference. With Alec Brainerd leading the charge, timing and sequencing were everything: each partner’s deliverables arrived exactly when needed, preventing bottlenecks. The collaborative bandwidth Artisan has cultivated over years of relationships made the impossible not just possible, but early.
Wisp was delivered two weeks ahead of schedule. The achievement reinforced Artisan Boatworks’ reputation: not only as master craftsmen, but as a yard capable of managing large, complex, partner-heavy projects with demanding expectations.
