2007 J.O. Brown 23u0027 Launch AGNES

Built in 2007 by the legendary J.O. Brown & Son boatyard on North Haven, Maine, AGNES represents the culmination of more than 120 years of uninterrupted family boatbuilding tradition. She is believed to be the last wooden boat built with the direct involvement of master boatbuilder James E. Brown, whose family had been building and repairing boats on North Haven since 1888.

The inspiration for AGNES came when her original owners admired the Brownsu0027 own workboat, KIM-LIN, and commissioned a traditional side-tiller launch built in the same timeless manner. Construction began in 2005 and continued over two and a half years, using many of the original tools and methods that had been handed down through five generations of the Brown family. Every stage of the build, from laying the oak keel to her launching in the Fox Island Thorofare, was documented by Kim Brown Alexander in The Making of Agnes, a privately published photographic history of her construction.

More than simply a beautiful launch, AGNES is a rare opportunity to own an authentic piece of Maine boatbuilding history. Built in the same waterfront shop where generations of the Brown family produced hundreds of wooden boats, she embodies an unbroken tradition of craftsmanship that has shaped North Havenu0027s maritime heritage for well over a century.

Construction is traditional caulked cedar planking over steam bent oak frames and backbone.  All mechanical fasteners are bronze.  The fit and finish of the magogany comaings, seats, and transom is of a high yacht standard, and the Yanmar 4JH3-TE 120 hp diesel has only 186 hrs.  AGNES has been professionally maintained by Artisan Boatworks in Rockport, Maine since new.
