2005 Shelter Island 38 Hardtop

Asking Price: $425,000

What do you get when you combine the timeless sheer, seakeeping ability, and practical wisdom of a Downeast Maine lobster boat with Doug Zurn’s gift for designing fast, efficient powerboats? The answer is the Shelter Island 38.

First commissioned by Billy Joel and launched by Coecles Harbor Marine, now CH Marine, on Shelter Island, New York, in 1996, the design was born from Joel’s desire for “Newport by lunch” performance: the ability to cover serious distances in a day without sacrificing the character and comfort of a traditional Downeast boat. Zurn delivered a hull that was well ahead of its time—handsome, efficient, and capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots, while retaining the ride quality and seaworthiness of its Maine working-boat ancestry.

The design proved influential well beyond its own success. Bob Johnstone, founder of MJM Yachts, has cited the Shelter Island 38 as one of the boats that inspired him to hire Zurn to design the MJM line, and Billy Joel later returned to Zurn to design his celebrated 57-foot fast commuter yacht, Vendetta. With only 63 examples built, the Shelter Island 38 remains a rare sight on the water and an even rarer offering on the brokerage market.

SEDNA (originally called RUNNYMEDE) is Hull #37, built in 2005.  She is one of the desirable hardtop examples, providing excellent protection from the elements while preserving the open cockpit and clean profile that are hallmarks of the design.

In 2014, SEDNA underwent a comprehensive repower with twin Yanmar common-rail diesels and joystick controls, bringing modern performance and effortless handling to an already exceptional hull. Combined with an up-to-date electronics suite and modern onboard systems, she offers the capability and convenience expected aboard a much newer yacht.

During the winter of 2025–2026, both engines received complete external reconditioning by Rockport Marine. The engine room is exceptionally well presented and reflects the same level of care found throughout the vessel.

SEDNA has benefited from knowledgeable ownership, professional maintenance, and continual investment. She presents to a very high standard both cosmetically and mechanically and is ready for immediate use. Aside from a small amount of cockpit varnish that will eventually merit attention, there is little left for a new owner to address, a consideration reflected in the asking price.

Rarely does a Shelter Island 38 come to market with this combination of pedigree, performance, condition, and modern machinery. SEDNA represents an opportunity to acquire one of the finest examples of the breed.
