CLOUD IX is a lightweight, exceptionally stiff performance trimaran combining remarkable light-air ability with the offshore racing pedigree of Lock Crowther’s famous Kraken 40 design. Built in 1975 of cold-molded wood/epoxy and plywood, she reflects an uncompromising approach to sailing performance: slender hulls, low displacement and an efficient, highly engineered structure with box-section crossbeams. Approximately twenty-five years of continuous ownership, maintenance and updating have preserved the qualities that have earned this design its cult-like following.

The Kraken 40 established its offshore credentials early, when an example won the 1969 New York-to-Bermuda race with Crowther aboard. Developed during the formative years of modern multihull racing, the design helped demonstrate what a properly engineered lightweight trimaran could accomplish offshore. Her low profile, widely spaced hulls and compact accommodations all reflect that racing heritage.

Her light-air performance is a particular strength. Those same qualities make her an appealing family cruising boat. The broad deck and trampoline areas provide space for children to stretch out in the nets and enjoy being close to the water, while all sailing control lines lead back to the cockpit for ease of single-handing. A canvas dodger provides shelter at the companionway, and a bow pulpit was added by the current owner for additional safety. Below, full standing headroom, practical sleeping arrangements and a proper galley make time aboard comfortable without burdening the boat with an elaborate cruising interior.

Raised pilot berths occupy either side of the main cabin, with the port berth extending to form a double. Additional sleeping spaces include a forward bunk beneath the deck and a wide single berth beneath the cockpit. The galley includes a two-burner cooktop, icebox, stainless-steel sink and ample storage, while a manual marine head and separate washbasin serve the forward accommodations. Opening ports and overhead hatches provide ventilation and natural light. Fresh paint, varnished trim and exposed structure give the interior a clean, bright finish.

Auxiliary propulsion and battery charging are provided by a lightly used Honda four-stroke outboard with electric tilt, mounted in a dedicated well. Electrical equipment includes a distribution panel and interior reading lights. Additional equipment includes bilge pumps and rope-and-chain anchor rode stowed forward.

The main cabin has recently been repainted, and both interior and exterior paintwork are in good condition. The boat is reported completely free of any rot, delamination or failing coatings.
