“The original 39’ Concordia Yawls were never made to fit any racing rules. They were made to fit the ocean.”  said Waldo Holland, who conceived the famous 1938 design by Raymond Hunt.  Comfortable, sea-kindly, and fast in all conditions, the well-proven Concordia Yawl is “much like a good apple pie: you can’t improve on it.”

Enter the 41’ Concordia Yawl, a refinement of the original 39’, created to optimize the original boat for the offshore Bermuda Race and predominant CCA rating rule of the time.  The resulting increased speed, stability, and interior volume have proven exceptionally popular with racers and cruisers alike.

MR. BADGER is one of the larger 41-foot Concordia yawls, built in 1957.  Her masthead yawl rig, roller-furling headsail, and self-tailing winches provide a practical sail-handling arrangement, while tiller steering preserves the direct feel that is such an important part of sailing a Concordia.

MR. BADGER’s aluminum mainmast was a significant Concordia-supplied upgrade at the time of construction. Recently repainted, it reduces annual maintenance compared with a varnished wooden spar.

MR. BADGER underwent a substantial refit at Gannon & Benjamin in 2017, including a new stem, replacement floor timbers forward, a mast step, frames repairs, and refastening. In 2021 she received a new Yanmar diesel and running gear, including a stainless-steel shaft, PSS shaft seal, and three-blade feathering Variprop.

Most recently the entire interior has been repainted, including the underside of the deck. This was a substantial job, and makes a real difference to the brightness and freshness of the accommodation.

Under her present ownership (since 2018,) MR. BADGER has been used for private sailing charters around Jamestown and Newport and for extended personal cruising along the New England coast to the Canadian border. Her combination of substantial structural work, recent machinery, and a freshly painted interior makes her an attractive opportunity for someone seeking the roomier Concordia 41 with much of the expensive work already behind her.

MR. BADGER is mahogany planked on oak frames, with bronze fastenings, a full keel, and an attached rudder. Her deck is traditionally laid teak, with varnished mahogany hatches and a painted canvas-covered housetop. The interior retains the original Concordia arrangement, paneled pine joinery, and solid teak cabin sole.

• 2021 — Yanmar 3YM30AE diesel installed, with new shaft, feathering propeller, shaft log, and PSS dripless seal.
• 2021 — Aluminum mainmast refinished with Awlgrip; 25-gallon holding tank installed.
• 2024 — Housetop repaired and repainted.
• 2026 — Entire interior repainted, including the underside of the deck; new Sunbrella dodger.

The straightforward four-berth layout provides two berths forward, an enclosed head to port and hanging locker opposite, followed by the main saloon with settees to port and starboard and the galley aft. The warmth of the original pine interior and teak sole is complemented by the newly painted surfaces. Interior and cockpit cushions are in excellent condition.

The galley has a gimballed two-burner Origo alcohol stove, stainless-steel sink, and icebox. Fresh water is supplied by a manual pump, and the head is a manual Wilcox Crittenden with a holding tank and deck pumpout.

Masthead yawl rig with an aluminum mainmast, varnished spruce mizzen mast, and spruce booms. Stainless-steel wire standing rigging, bronze turnbuckles and chainplates, roller-furling headsail, and slab-reefing mainsail. Doyle mainsail, mizzen, and jib are in excellent condition. Covers are provided for the mainsail and mizzen.

Self-tailing winches include Barient primaries and secondaries, a Lewmar main halyard winch, and a Lewmar mainsheet winch. Original bronze Merriman winches remain in the rig.

Yanmar 3YM30AE diesel, installed 2021, freshwater cooling; Kanzaki reduction gear; stainless-steel shaft; three-blade bronze feathering Variprop; PSS dripless shaft seal. 

Tankage

Fuel: approximately 20 gallons in one Monel tank.
 Fresh water: approximately 50 gallons in three Monel tanks.
 Holding: 25-gallon polyethylene tank installed in 2021.

12-volt system with two Group 27 batteries, alternator charging, ProSport battery charger, battery selector switch, and breaker panel with voltmeter and ammeter.

White compass; Icom VHF with AIS; Datamarine depth, speed, and wind instruments.   

Bronze Ideal anchor windlass; Delta and Danforth anchors with chain and nylon rode; stainless-steel bow and stern pulpits; bronze stanchions with double lifelines; boarding ladder; dodger, sail covers, docklines, and fenders.

Two electric Rule bilge pumps with float switches, manual cockpit bilge pump, and high-water alarm.

Launched as PRETTIMARIE for Hugh Bullock of Edgartown, MR. BADGER was subsequently known as PRETTIROSE, BEAUTY, and DOLCE. Her present owners named her in memory of their friend and mentor Richard Hemenway Hutchinson, a devoted Concordia sailor whose character reminded them of Badger in The Wind in the Willows.
