Description

KYPRIS

KYPRIS was designed by K. Aage Nielsen for Bradley Noyes and built by A. Walsted Baadeværft in Thurø, Denmark. Launched in 1962 as TIOGA, she was the third of four Noyes yachts to carry the name and was said to have been his favorite.

The design took several years to develop and was an enlargement of Noyes’s earlier 39-foot TIOGA. She has the generous beam, moderate overhangs, centerboard configuration, and unmistakable sheer of Nielsen’s work from this period. Steering is by a wheel mounted well forward in the cockpit.

KYPRIS is double-planked in mahogany over laminated oak frames. Her inner and outer planking were glued together with epoxy, a considerable added expense and an unusual improvement when she was built. The result is a notably fair hull, with smooth topsides and no visible plank seams. The backbone and floor timbers are oak, and a new forefoot timber was installed in 2019. The mast step, centerboard trunk, and associated floors are Monel, the fastenings are bronze, and the deck is plywood. Overall, KYPRIS is in good structural condition.

KYPRIS retains her original aluminum mast. Her sails, electronics, and Perkins 4-108 diesel are fully functional, though dated. A new owner will likely want to update these in time, but none prevents the boat from being used as she is.

The interior is straightforward and comfortable. The companionway is slightly offset to port, with the galley aft to starboard. A quarter berth and pilot berth are fitted to port, opposite the main-cabin settee. Forward are an enclosed head to port, lockers opposite, and a conventional V-berth. The arrangement provides good access to the working parts of the boat and makes sensible use of her considerable interior volume.

Walsted built a second yacht to the same design three years later. That boat, STAR SONG, was completed as a yawl with a doghouse and a substantially revised interior.

TIOGA was sold and renamed KYPRIS in 1967. She has carried the name ever since.

KYPRIS is a capable cruising boat from a first-rate designer and one of world’s best yards for this type of construction. Her principal needs are updates rather than restoration, and with some upgrades would undoubtedly prove to be a fierce competitor on the classic racing circuit.
