About Us

Modern boatbuilders dedicated to classic design, technique,
and material

Artisan Boatworks’ team of master craftsmen build fine wooden boats up to 60′ feet LOA at our purpose-built shop in mid-coast Maine.

Our Approach

The Artisan Philosophy

At Artisan Boatworks, our work is guided by experience earned over decades and a deep respect for material, proportion, and tradition. We believe the finest boats are the product of careful judgment, disciplined execution, and an understanding that beauty and performance are inseparable. Wooden boats demand patience, precision, and integrity at every stage of their creation. When built and cared for properly, they reward that effort with longevity, character, and a quality of experience unmatched by any other form of construction.

Our philosophy is rooted in stewardship. Whether constructing a new boat, restoring a historic yacht, or maintaining a cherished family heirloom, our responsibility is to ensure that each vessel is structurally sound, visually authentic, and prepared for a long future on the water. We do the work once, do it properly, and do it with integrity. That approach may not be the fastest, but it produces boats that endure.

Our Approach

Why Wood?

Wood is not simply a construction material; it is the soul of a boat. It carries warmth, texture, and structure in a way no synthetic material can replicate. In a wooden boat, the structure itself becomes the design. Frames, beams, knees, planking, and joinery are not hidden or disguised. They are integral, purposeful, and beautiful.

For generations, designers refined wooden construction to achieve an extraordinary balance of strength, lightness, and performance. Those proportions were not arbitrary; they evolved through experience, failure, and success on the water. When properly maintained, wooden boats do not wear out so much as they age honestly. They can be renewed repeatedly without losing their identity, their pedigree, or their value.

Our Process

01 Consultation and Design

Some clients arrive with a clear vision: an entirely new custom design, a faithful recreation of a classic design, or the restoration of an important existing boat. Others come seeking guidance—what will best suit their intended use, their experience, and their aesthetic. In either case we begin by listening. Together we discuss and refine the project’s goals, defining its scope, timeline, and budget.

02 The Collaborative Build

Unlike making a purchase, commissioning a custom boat or undertaking a restoration is a collaboration. Our clients remain closely involved throughout project. We share progress photographs, exchange regular emails, and speak by phone. Decisions are made as the work unfolds, thoughtfully and with guidance. Many clients later tell us that the building or restoration process itself proved more rewarding than they expected, sometimes even more so than owning the finished boat—and they are eager to begin again.

03 Stewardship and Care

The boats that leave our shop are like family, and launch day marks the beginning, not the end, of the relationship. Most boats built or restored by Artisan Boatworks return each fall for specialized off-season storage and maintenance. For those farther afield, we help arrange full mooring-to-mooring service through trusted local providers.

Our History

Artisan Boatworks was founded in 2002 in Rockport, Maine, with a singular focus: to build, restore, and maintain wooden boats to the highest possible standard. The yard was conceived not as a high-volume operation, but as a place where bespoke wooden yachts could be stewarded without compromise.

The company grew steadily by reputation. Early projects combined deep respect for classic design with the disciplined execution required to make wooden boats reliable and usable in modern conditions. Over time, Artisan Boatworks became known for its ability to handle technically demanding restorations, faithful replicas of historically significant designs, and new construction that honors tradition without being bound by it.

The Team

President / Lead Designer / Owner

Alec Brainerd

Alec Brainerd is the founder, owner, and lead designer at Artisan Boatworks. His approach to boatbuilding is shaped as much by time at sea as by time in the shop. Before founding the company, Alec spent more than a decade sailing and delivering some of the world’s finest yachts, logging over 15,000 offshore miles across the Atlantic, Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Pacific.

That experience instilled a deep understanding of how boats are used, maintained, and relied upon in demanding conditions. It also set an uncompromising standard for systems, structure, and finish. Boats must work as well as they look.

Alec’s formal boatbuilding education and years working alongside master craftsmen in Maine further refined his judgment. He brings a rare combination of sailor’s intuition, builder’s discipline, and designer’s eye to every project. Clients value his ability to listen carefully, advise candidly, and guide complex decisions with clarity and restraint.

His philosophy continues to shape every aspect of Artisan Boatworks.
